Pond liners – An Easy Means to Design Your Own Pond

A pond liner consists of an impermeable membrane used for lining garden ponds or artificial streams. It plays an important part in the design and construction of ponds. Liners are available in rolls and they are either pre-fabricated to match a pond design or seamed together at the site. It is important to protect the liner from damages due to sharp things that may be present in the water body. Sand layers, concrete or fiber-matting are used to give protection. The liners are available in a few types namely, flexible, preformed and concrete pond liners. The various materials and their features are discussed here.

Flexible pond liners give a more natural appearance for fish ponds or garden ponds. They are crafted from flexible materials like Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC), Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Butyl Rubber. Flexible liners need to be protected from rips or tears that could be caused by sharp objects and birds. EPDM is expensive, but very durable even in cold conditions and resists the sun’s UV radiations. On the other hand, PVC is cost effective and can be easily fitted to match any pond design. It is not as durable as EPDM, but can last for almost a decade. Another drawback is that its durability is affected by cold climatic conditions and direct rays from the sun. Cost-wise and quality-wise, HDPE is an intermediate option and provides a durable lining. Again, it is not suitable for cold regions. Butyl Rubber liners are most preferred because they are durable and easy to install. Rubber is a thick and heavy material and a little difficult to fold. In spite of the advantageous features, it is important to keep in mind that the material is toxic to fish.

Preformed pond liners are preferred by many people, as it saves the digging process and can be installed easily. Fiberglass is predominantly used and it is important to provide a layer of sand under it for safe functioning. It is long-lasting and may come with aesthetic features such as shelves for aquatic plants. Concrete pond liners require professional installation and they are the most durable, when compared to other types of liners. They may develop cracks in cold outdoors, but they allow patching and repairs. Further, it is a costly option and time consuming as well, because it takes several weeks for the curing process.

It is important to determine the dimensions of the garden pond before purchasing a liner. The length and breadth should be measured at the longest and broadest points respectively. It is safe to purchase a little extra material for edging, which is done by rolling over and securing in a furrow, or by fixing it to a brick or concrete wall. The choice of pond liners depends on the available features, the nature of the site and individual taste. Fish ponds need to be at least three to four feet deep and the lining material should be non-toxic. Flexible liners are suitable for complex designs. Preformed liners are available in a myriad of shapes and in a range of costs.
