Pond Waterfalls – For Dazzling Gardens That Mimic Nature

Waterfalls add a marvelous splendor to enhance the beauty of a garden landscape. A daily look at cascading waterfalls is amazing and serves to heal the mind and enliven the spirit. Pond waterfalls are beautiful elements of nature that augment the natural appearance of the garden. It is indeed an irresistible treat to the eyes and ears. By following a few essential principles, it is possible to emulate a natural waterfall to add a water cascade to the garden pond.

The foremost thing is to consider the size of the pond and form a proportionate size for the waterfall. A waterfall that is too big or too tall may look disproportionate. The topography should be considered with regard to the pond size, pump capacity and pipe size. These factors can help determine an ideal design for the pond waterfall. A two-foot high waterfall renders a higher visual appeal when compared to a four-foot high waterfall.

In general, three main factors should be taken into account while constructing pond waterfalls. These include the amount of water that flows down, the distance traversed during the fall and the spot where the water falls. The sound produced by the waterfall varies according to the medium into which it falls. It may reach a shallow pool that is positioned below, or fall on rocks, to create corresponding distinctive sounds. The intensity of the sound depends on the height of the pond waterfall.  It is interesting to note that pond waterfalls utilize elevation to a good extent. Landscape designers can either use an existing slop or construct an artificial elevation to get the desired outcome. A strategic design would involve a distance of five to eight feet from the garden pond.

It is also important to lay a flexible pond liner from the upper portion of the waterfall through the wall behind it, till it reaches the pond. Boulders are used to fix the liner in position and it is particularly useful for making huge waterfalls. EPDM liner is normally used under the stream, as it holds the water splashes and allows twists in the path of the water. Those who prefer small and calmer pond waterfalls can use pre-cast concrete structures. Though they are expensive, they offer a viable alternative to the construction process. Natural rocks are cheap and their natural shapes and sizes enhance the appearance. Flat rocks tend to give a better balance.  Several combinations can be tried out to find the most optimal and aesthetically appealing structure. Black waterfall foams can be used to let the water flow over stones. As the foam expands considerably, it must be used in moderation.

Creativity and patience go hand in hand while building a stunning pond waterfall. By tuning one’s imagination, it is possible to mimic wonderful waterfalls provided by nature. It is a pleasure to see the waterfall getting into shape and it adds to the satisfaction and delight of the pond owner. Pond waterfalls become the focal point of household gardens, owing to their unique similitude to nature.
